How Asterysm works

A few things worth knowing first, a guide to every part of the app, and the shortcuts worth learning. The rest the app tells you as you go: an empty page says what goes on it.

At a glance

  1. Two modes, one book

Writing is the manuscript, a scene at a time. Planning is the same book seen whole, in four rooms: its scenes, plotlines, characters, and world. ⌘1Ctrl+1 writes; ⌘2Ctrl+2 to ⌘5Ctrl+5 go straight to a room.

  2. Type @ to link a name

Type @ and a name to link a character or a place, right in the prose. Point at the name to see who it is, and Context, beside the page, keeps everyone in the scene at hand.

  3. Type / on an empty line

It offers what can go there: a picture, a scene break, a subheading, an extract, a centered line. Pause on an empty line, and a + in the margin offers the same.

  4. Select words for more

A bubble offers Bold, Italic, Footnote, Synonyms, and Link. ⇧F7Shift+F7 opens the thesaurus on the word at the caret, offline, in the form the sentence needs.

  5. Search goes anywhere

⌘KCtrl+K finds any scene, chapter, character, or place by its name, and any command by the name the menus give it.

  6. Nothing is lost

Asterysm saves as you write. What you remove goes to the Archive, with Undo, and every scene keeps its history: ⌘SCtrl+S keeps a version now.
